Vantage Point Redux 2 - Sketches

Greetings shipbreakers!

There are many ways to slice and dice composition.

Rule of thirds, Fibonacci - Golden ratio, gut feel or what I call the Luc Besson school of composition. This places every important element within the frame, dead centre. The horizon may not be dead centre, it may be lower or higher, but you can bet your bottom dollar a key figure or object or objects will dominate the centre of that frame.

Another approach is to create UNEQUAL distribution of SHAPE and SCALE. You follow that precept and it’s almost guaranteed your composition will be a lot more interesting than it might have otherwise been.

In this second update of the Vantage Point Redux, I can show you a bunch of thumbnails where I try to keep that in mind.

This a rough marker rendering of just shadow shapes, not value. It helps to see the shadows as abstract shapes because this is most likely what the eye will read from a distance.

In meantime, see you on the next rotation!

Vantage Point is not a complete re-paint from scratch so I am working with an existing composition and elements within that composition that I like. It’s adding to the painting in a way that does not diminish the idea or feel I’m trying to communicate.

In this case, a sense of vast sweeping landscape that stretches off into the distance between those vast ship structures. How much is too much?

So far, I’m aiming for the middle sketch with the possibility of adding the foreground antennae on the left side… maybe.

By the next post I should have value and colour studies done.

As it happens I have also been documenting this process on video. By coincidence, CGWorld Japan want to use the resulting video in their upcoming CGWorld Event in September.
